Having lived in Columbus my whole life, I, like many locals, had begun to take my hometown for granted. For those who don’t know, Columbus, Indiana, is visited by people from all over the world each year who come to check out our surprising collection of modernist architecture. But sometimes those of us who live here become desensitized to what is around us.

As a perk of interning at the Visitors Center this summer, I got to go on the Architecture Bus Tour. This tour is about two hours total, and takes tour-goers all around town. The knowledgeable volunteer tour guide provided information about each place we passed along the way. They know so much!

Before the tour, I wasn’t sure how much I had to learn about the place I grew up, but I was pleased to gain several new pieces of information about Columbus. I also realized how often I drive by familiar places and don’t even give them a second thought.

Each place we went, I learned something I didn’t know. It was a great reminder that each building has a story. Each story adds to the history of Columbus. It was also fun to see how people who have never been to Columbus reacted to each spot.

So the moral of the story is don’t take your hometown for granted–especially if you happen to be from a place where good design is valued and incorporated into everyday life.

Book your architecture tour today! Along with the Architecture Tour the Visitors Center offers a variety of other tours including the Miller House and Garden, Downtown Landmarks Walking tour, a tour of landmarks around Columbus, as well as many self-guided tour options. We would love to show you around!
