Continuing Education credits for AIA members

The Columbus Visitors Center is proud to offer CEUs to AIA Indiana members who take our tours. Thousands of visitors tour Columbus each year just for fun. Now you can earn professional CEUs while exploring the small city you likely first learned about in architecture school!

Architecture Highlights Bus Tour

Tour overview (two-hour tour)

The Columbus, Indiana bus tour drives by over thirty architecturally significant structures, landscapes and public works of art. In addition, this tour includes stops to tour the interiors of two significant buildings. The tour is lead by highly trained and skilled tour guides who narrate the tour with carefully prepared scripts.

Miller House & Garden Tour

Tour overview (two-hour tour)

The Miller House and Garden is one of the jewels set into the famous architectural destination of Columbus, Indiana which is owned and cared for by Newfields. This tour provides an opportunity to experience one of the finest expressions of the American modernism design movement. The Miller House and Garden is an integration of house and landscape that draws upon historical precedents without repeating them, enfolding them in a compelling composition of forms and spaces that captures the genius of its designers, the aspirations of its owners and the spirit of their time.

Tours begin at the Visitors Center, downtown Columbus, at 506 Fifth Street, with free parking.

Iconic Columbus Tour

Tour overview (ninety-minute tour)

This guided walking tour of downtown Columbus offers a thoughtful review of many of the most lasting and significant architecturally important buildings and landscapes in Columbus, Indiana. Throughout this tour, the attendees will encounter a variety of architectural styles including; historic, Victorian, modernism and contemporary. These buildings and landscapes were designed by some of the most enduring and well-known architects and design professionals. In addition, this tour includes two stops to tour the interiors of significant buildings. The tour is lead by highly trained and skilled tour guides who narrate the tour with carefully prepared scripts.

Inn at Irwin Gardens Tour

Tour overview (one-hour tour)

Get an insider’s look at the Irwin House, the Irwin family home and childhood home of J. Irwin Miller, which is virtually unchanged since 1910. This tour features an extensive look at the first floor and one of the upstairs private suites ( when available ). A unique glimpse into the history and lifestyle of the Edwardian-era family that has been responsible for the Columbus modern architecture movement.

Historic Zaharakos Tour

Tour overview (one-hour tour)

Take a step back in time with the Zaharakos historian on a tour of the historic ice cream parlor and museum. This tour is an exclusive tour of the private second story, which houses the Mechanical Music Library, Soda Fountain Library and the elegant Crystal Parlor suite of Victorian room what the Zaharakos family lived until 1914.
